Design your own kitchen. First steps: Define the storage requirements

Item # 1-Setting Objectives-capacity storage.

This is the first in a series of articles on designing your own new kitchen or remodeling. I will cover the creation of written plans and drawings, cabinet types, hardware on the secondary market, ventilation, upholstery items, plumbing, countertops, electrical / lighting systems, windows and selection the contractor, among other things. In other words, most of the topics to be covered by a design professional kitchen design and remodeling of the process.

The articles of the series to proceed in a logical order of the basic design considerations for installation tips. You do not have to be an uber handyman to understand the concepts I am presenting. By contrast, the lack of initial knowledge of the reader may be a good thing. A reader might be more inclined to really consider some of the ideas presented, without preconceived notions or prejudices. Some of the best kitchens are designed by artistic types who have little or no about construction, but are clear about their needs.

I spent almost 10 years as a designer of full-time kitchen manager. At that time I have designed hundreds of kitchens and supervised the installation of almost all of them. I no longer work in the field, so I have no financial incentive to recommend products or methods. My intention is to show what works and will help in the process. Whether designing, installing your own kitchen or work done by a study, independent contractor or other source, I hope this information is useful in planning a well thought kitchen design viable.

Once the decision to remodel or install a new kitchen, the tendency is to go ahead and immediately start looking at catalogs and visiting rooms Exhibition of "inspiration." My advice: resist the temptation. Why? Because you must define the functional work space in a very specific even before you start thinking "products." At this point, exhibition halls are a distraction. Function units are not, conversely, so we're going to take things in a logical order, the first plan, the store later.

First, a jargon needed to go a little talking trade. Cabinets on the walls at the counters are known as "walls" sitting under countertops cabinets are called "bases" and talls "are the cabinets that extend from floor to ceiling, in general, as pantries or similar. A trading order for cabinets will list in that order, Wall, Base, Tall. Sometimes cabinets are also called "boxes" for short, as in "How many boxes in this order?" or "These boxes are really nice ..." It makes sound like you're in the know ...

His absolute, do not skip, you must first step is to make an inventory of your needs of storage. If you are not step, you could end up spending much U.S. dollars for a kitchen that does not have enough cabinets to store all your food and cooking equipment. A nuisance than as say in the trade.

If you're remodeling, you measure the existing kitchen. If you're starting from scratch, go for a kitchen that looks on the right and measure it. You'll quickly learn the difference between what a kitchen with 150 cubic feet of storage looks like and one with 300 cubic feet. Forget the door styles designs luxury island and stoves. For now focus on understanding the key measure of archive material of cubic capacity. We'll get to the other things later, promise.

In the kitchen industry, the storage capacity is measured in cubic feet. Cubic footage is calculated as width x height x depth of a closet operating or cabinet, in that order. You're going to measure the storage capacity of the base, wall and tall cabinets in your current kitchen or another person. Since almost all cabinets to be raised have standard depths and heights, all you have to worry about is the full implementation of the cabinets to be measured. I'll show you how and give a couple of examples to make sure you are doing this correctly.

Remember to do all the calculations and descriptions of the cabinet dimensions in the order of width, height and depth (DMS). To keep things simple I like to do all my calculations of capacity in the feet, but I will show in both directions.

Wall cabinets are 12 "deep and either 30", 36 "or 42" tall. Therefore the activation of 11 '30 " high wall cabinets, using calculations of an inch, would:

132 "x 30" x 12 "47 520 = (132" is 11 feet x 12 " foot)

47 520 / 1728 = 27 ½ cubic feet of wall (1,728 is the number of cubic inches 1 cubic foot or 12 "x 12" x 12 ")

Thus the 11 'within 30 "high wall cabinets is 27 ½ cubic feet of storage.

Measured in feet instead of inches, the following would be correct for the above:

11 'x 2.5' x 1 '= 27.5 cubic feet.

Cabinets base are the same only 34 ½ "High x 24" deep. I normally about 34 ½ "value to 3 'to make the calculations in feet-close enough.

Example: 16 'run of base cabinets, the calculations in inches:

192 "x 34 ½" x 24 "= 158 976

158,976 / 1,728 = 92 cubic feet.

Measured in feet:

16 'x 3' x 2 '= 96 cubic feet.

wall cabinets are 12 "or 24" deep depending on the design.

The calculation of storage capacity need not be accurate within 5% is sufficient. Here are some things to consider when implementing their measures:

  • Do not include the cabinet door in measurements depth, which is only measuring the channel "or dimensions of real boxes. Keep it simple!
  • When measuring an "L" in running form, do not measure the inside of the "L" twice, the measure the length of one side, measures the total length of the other side and the deduction of 24 " bases or 12 "for the walls.
  • Do not include the width of the aircraft as a career, that is, deduct the 30 "for a stove and 24" a dishwasher in a race.
  • Include the width of all sink cabinets in a race.
  • Do not forget the cabinet over the refrigerator.
  • In short, if it is a cabinet, which include implementation. If it's an empty space as a refrigerator, stove or dishwasher Bay, leave it out storage of their measurements.

Suppose you just finished taking the existing provision which intends to remodel and entered the 225 cubic feet. This is your reference number.

Here's what to do next. It brings together all the loose items currently stored oustide kitchen to include in the new design, more canned food in the garage, perhaps a broom or vacuum in the hall closet, kitchen tools to covet, toaster of bread currently stored in the tool shed, whatever. Now go get some cardboard boxes to store all those things and measure the cubic footage of boxes. Make sure to carry the boxes in a similar fashion as you would a load of kitchen cabinet, not cram allowed. Add your cubic feet in addition to the existing requirement in the kitchen and now has the real number. Congratulations! You have completed a phase. Now is the time to think about possible solutions.

Therefore, how much capacity is added to the existing provision? 10-25-50% more?

The question is, "Where the extra capacity?" To meet its objectives, optimize either the space or set a new floor plan.

Some possible answers to consider, organized from lowest to highest cost:

  • The cabinet over refrigerator has 24 "deep, bet yours is 12" deep. There are 3 additional cubic feet.
  • Many kitchens 8 'ceilings are 30 "cabinets in high school. These can be extended to 36" or 42 "high cabinets. A 42" high cabinet has a Storage cubic cm per linear foot compared with 30 high-cabin, this adds up if you have plenty of wall space available.
  • Hang cabinets duplex existing on a peninsula.
  • Base cabinets with deep shelves tonnes of waste a half-space. Retrofit to launch Bead trays everywhere.
  • call counter cabinets cabins can be used to fill odd spaces counter, are 12-15 "deep and in a kitchen with 8 'ceilings would be 48 "to 54" high. That is 4 cubic feet per meter run.
  • Many kitchens have "a blind inside corners of the base and wall runs. calls for a lazy susan base 12 cubic feet. A cut foot "wall cabinet in which obtained 3 additional cubes.
  • Consider replacing part of a wall and run with a base of 8 feet tall, 24 "pantry unit deployments depth the bottom and tray dividers above the fold. You can even get these configured to hold a broom or vacuum.
  • If the kitchen is adjacent to a wall garage, build a bay in the garage and filled with material storage pantry.
  • Reorganize the kitchen in a double L or L to the configuration of the island. Done properly, it is very efficient uses of space.
  • Annex part of an adjoining room and new kitchen space.
  • Moving walls doors, windows and partitions to claim more space for a modified plant.
  • Larger floor plan into new territory by building a bay a new room or similar. It implies a new foundation, walls and roof line.
  • Sell the house, buy a bigger one. Seriously.

Congratulations, you're well on the way to dominate the process.
